Egyptian ceremonies will be performed Thursday at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute to commemorate groundbreaking for its expansion and renovation. The ceremony, known in antiquity as “Giving the Temple to Its Lord” and performed whenever a temple was built, will be enacted by institute director William Summer. Children in costume will assist him. The $10 million renovation includes installation of a climate control system in the galleries and artifact storage areas. It is the first renovation since the building was completed in 1931. The galleries will not reopen until spring 1998.
