Typhoon Kirk lashed Japan’s main island of Honshu with torrential rains and winds of up to 130 m.p.h. Wednesday.

Three people were killed and an American sailor was among the missing.

Nearly 50 people have been seriously hurt since the 12th storm of the season struck Tuesday. Late Wednesday, the storm’s center was about 315 miles southwest of Tokyo near Tottori.

Weather officials warned of 27-foot waves and 20 inches of rainfall overnight.

An unidentified U.S. sailor was believed drowned after disappearing from a seawall near Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, 1,000 miles southwest of Tokyo.
