Officials at a museum aren’t sure what to do with a request to turn over several artifacts of Chief Little Turtle, the Miami Indians’ distinguished war leader and treaty negotiator.

Tom Julian, a Minnesota art dealer, approached the museum last September, claiming to be a spokesman for the Miami Indians of Oklahoma. He asked for 30 artifacts taken from Little Turtle’s grave at Lawton Place, including silver used for trading, crosses, armbands, brooches, a pipe and a sword he received from George Washington.

“Everyone has a legitimate claim, and that makes things a whole lot more interesting,” said Bill Decker of the museum, who admits the society is “caught in the middle.”
