I applaud Ron Grossman and Charles Leroux for their objective and accurate profile of the Mexican-American community of Chicago’s Little Village (“Just trying to fit in,” Page 1, July 3). In an era when public sentiment has turned so strongly anti-immigrant, their portrait of this community as one of the last believers in the American Dream should help derail the more popular belief that immigration is the biggest threat to our culture.

I hope that more people will see Mexican immigrants as the hard-working, family-oriented, productive asset to this country that they are and not the culture-threatening, welfare-hungry invaders that the xenophobes and their poll-watching political leaders would have us believe.
