It was a great delight reading William Pfaff’s commentary on Islam (Op-Ed, Aug. 13). Indeed, Islam is the most misunderstood religion in the world, not only by non-Muslims but also by Muslims themselves. Otherwise, why do you think so many different sects exist within Islam?

The constant misinterpretation of Islam and Islamic ideology by the American news media and politicians has produced a false image of Islam as a religion of terrorists and fire-breathing mullahs.

Mr. Pfaff has done a commendable job by trying to distinguish between extremist and traditional moderate Islam and could surely serve as an unbiased role model for journalists who believe in accurate and stereotype-free journalism.
