Teachers in some Indiana districts are returning to classrooms without contracts while standing their ground on how well they are compensated and how their schools are run.
August began with only 98 of 292 school corporations in the state having reached settlements with employees. Many have settled since then, but some districts — including the state’s largest, Indianapolis, as well as Muncie and Gary — face protracted negotiations.
Teachers are holding out not only for better pay and health insurance but also against shorter school days and closed campuses.
