Bob Dole has been trying for more than 20 years to get his party’s nod for a run for the office of president. Now he has it and so far has gone out of his way to get us to remember his service in World War II, his hometown and parents.
Although I honor and respect his service in that conflict, I, like millions of folks in their 40s and 50s, don’t wish to have this bit of information thrown at us in every speech. I have little interest in who his parents were, how much he loved them or what the people of Russell, Kan., did to shape the man we know today.
My main concern is what he plans to do about crime, taxes, lost jobs, dirty air, the cost of health insurance, etc. Come on, Mr. Dole, lay off the trips back in time. Millions and millions of us don’t care.
