Despite a flood that temporarily put them out of work and the loss of a home field advantage, lifeguards from the Park District’s Centennial Beach recently took both first and third place in the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s state lifeguard games.

“They did really well–I knew they would,” said Beach Manager Dick Perry of the 12 lifeguards who competed.

Originally set to be held Aug. 3 at Centennial Beach, the games were relocated to Batavia’s Harold Hall Quarry Beach after last month’s heavy rains caused the DuPage River to overflow into the Naperville facility. The July 18 floods shut down Centennial Beach until Aug. 5, after it had been drained, cleaned and refilled with fresh water.
