The results of a special census could help officials persuade the Postal Service to give Lake in the Hills its own ZIP code, trustees were told Tuesday.

Lake in the Hills has shared the 60102 ZIP code with Algonquin. Efforts to get the village a code of its own have met with little success, said Village Administrator Robert Pilat.

The local postmaster supports the proposal, Pilat said. The Postal Service’s Board of Governors must approve the measure.

The unofficial results of a special census taken in July counted 15,751 residents, an increase of about 6,000 since 1990. That figure could put some weight behind the ZIP code cause because it shows the “astronomical growth” of the community, Pilat said.

Some members of the Village Board said they strongly desire a local ZIP code and may join the push.
