On a few very important issues like abortion, the death penalty, the ban on assault weapons and such, the citizens of America should be given the privilege of dealing with them in national referendums, as many other countries do.

Instead of resolving these issues in a national, democratic vote and being done with it, we now let them fester and do great damage to the very fabric of our society. The burning and vandalism of abortion clinics and murder of doctors should not be tolerated. Peaceful demonstration is the American way.

With those important questions out of the way, our lawmakers may find time to create a health-insurance system for all Americans. All seniors are owed a secure, safe and comfortable retirement without major worries.

While we are at it, why not have our elections on a Sunday, when many more citizens could vote? If other nations can close their polls from 10 a.m. to noon so all can attend the church of their choice, why can’t we?

Our present and future political conventions should consider and include the above priority needs in their platforms. Go to it, presidential nominees and convention delegates. Include new ideas and substance in your discussions and plans for a better life for all Americans as you meet. The ways of the past need changes, and much responsibility rests on your proposals.
