The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County is exploring ways to increase the recycling of materials used in construction and demolition, agency officials said Thursday night.

Proposals include giving technical assistance to waste haulers and disposal facilities, as well as to developers, landscapers and construction companies.

The SWALCO board had asked its consulting engineers, Camp, Dresser and McKee Inc., Chicago, to identify facilities in the Chicago area that can recycle construction and demolition materials and to survey area builders and developers.

The firm’s study found that most construction and demolition material in Lake County, except for concrete and asphalt, is sent to landfills rather than recycled.

It costs about $900 to put into a landfill the debris generated from construction of a 2,000-square-foot home, said Andrew Quigley, executive director of SWALCO.
