I read with great interest the commentaries by R. Scott Appleby (Op-Ed, Aug. 16) and Steve Kloehn (Perspective, Aug. 18) regarding Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s Catholic Common Ground Project.

The erosion of unity and shared purpose splintering the church is very evident. I have witnessed this discord when attending mass at my parish, as well as through the St. Pius X Society.

In times of crisis, the church has traditionally turned inward to renew its catechism to better address the challenges it faces. As the Catholic Church approaches its third millennium, I trust Cardinal Bernardin’s Common Ground project will strengthen our core foundation of beliefs to foster a new sense of commitment and purpose among the members.
