“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I have no idea who first uttered this bit of sage advice, but it could well be a very excellent theme for the Democratic Convention.

The Republicans claim that they want a change. A change to what? Under President Clinton, the economy is in the best shape that it has been in the last 20 years. Inflation is in check, and the import/export gap has been narrowed. The budget deficit is lower, so what can we change?

This doesn’t give the opposition much to complain about, so they started a witch hunt, nitpicking into the personal life of Bill and Hillary Clinton. They seem to forget about the Republicans who are not saintly by any means: Richard Nixon and Watergate, Ronald Reagan and the Iran contra affair, Neil Bush and the savings and loan fiasco that is costing the taxpayers billions of dollars.

I wonder if Bob Dole and Jack Kemp could honestly be eligible to cast the first stone.
