I have read Bob Verdi’s column on Andre Dawson (Sports, Aug. 22), and he said it all. Andre Dawson really is the classiest athlete we’ll ever see. He is one of the last few left. I am a 26-year Cub fan but have only a few favorite Cubs. Andre Dawson is at the top of my list. Although Sammy Sosa was doing a great job in right field, Andre will forever be in every Cub fan’s heart. He will certainly be in mine.

While pro sports are being filled with whiners and money-grubbers, athletes like Andre Dawson are far too few. It’s a shame that this wonderful, unselfish man’s career had to end so soon. His ever-present knee problems, the loss of his beloved grandmother and especially, never winning a pennant, did not help him. Despite all that, he kept going like a trooper and kept a positive attitude. To me, that makes him a winner. He will be missed.
