The U.S. Census Bureau and the Village of Palatine are seeking enumerators for a special census that will take place in the village during the next four weeks.

The village sought the special census to determine whether the population of Palatine exceeds 50,000, which would enable the village to get additional state tax revenue. It also would make the village eligible for a $300,000 federal block grant, which could be used for neighborhood enhancements.

In 1994, the village’s population was estimated at 41,554.

The village needs 20 more enumerators, who will be responsible for ringing Palatine residents’ doorbells to get a population count of select areas in the village.

The enumerators need not be residents of the village, said Carol Hennessey, a village administrative aide who is a liaison to the Census Bureau.
