The recent rash of “liberal bashing” has gotten the best of me. I bit my tongue in 1988, swallowed my pride in ’94. But now, cranky old Bob Dole has really ticked me off.
As I see it, liberals have always been equivalent with compassion, tolerance and open-mindedness. We believe in creating a society where everyone has a place at the table, where the weak have a voice and where people–not business and the buck–are most important. Without liberal and progressive minds, women and minorities would not be allowed to vote–let alone be given the opportunity to fulfill their God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Conservatives, in my opinion, are synonymous with close-minded, bigoted and intolerant viewpoints. They would rather save a dollar than a human being. They care more about a child in a womb than when it is living. They maintain the status quo, believe big business is best and abhor anyone who doesn’t look, or act, like they do. I think it’s high time that I–and all the other proud liberals of this country–start turning the tables on the conservatives. Let’s put them on the defensive. After all, liberals are a heck of a lot kinder and gentler (as Thomas Wolfe, not George Bush, first put it) than Bob Dole and his ilk.
