Northwestern trainers said Sunday that X-rays of running back Darnell Autry’s sprained right shoulder did not show a break, and they have listed the Heisman Trophy hopeful as day-to-day for Saturday’s game against Illinois.

Autry suffered the injury against Wisconsin, which limited his play to the first half.

“I’ve seen guys come back (from a similar injury) in a few days, and I’ve seen others take two or three weeks,” trainer Steve Willard said. “We’ll know more after 48 or 72 hours.”

Also injured Saturday were tight end Darren Drexler (sprained left foot) and defensive tackle Matt Rice (sprained left ankle). Both are listed as probable.

The catch: Wide receiver D’Wayne Bates caught the game-winning touchdown in Saturday’s 34-30 victory over Wisconsin, but he wasn’t the primary target. He just happened to be wide open.

“I was getting ready to throw to Brian (Musso), but I couldn’t find him,” quarterback Steve Schnur said. “He’s short and I’m short.”
