It’s almost as though American men and women live on different political planets.
In female America there was a Clinton landslide:
Clinton 54%
Dole 37%
Male America split its vote evenly:
Clinton 44%
Dole 44%
But there was a split among the guys:
Votes for Clinton
Black men 78%
White men 39%
It’s still the economy, stupid
The better a voter felt about the economy, the more likely that person voted for President Clinton.
Here is how Illinois voters cast their ballots based on their perceptions of the economy:
ECONOMY EXCELLENT 89% FOR CLINTON
ECONOMY VERY GOOD 63% FOR CLINTON
ECONOMY NOT GOOD 51% FOR DOLE
ECONOMY POOR 66% FOR DOLE
Clinton carries Catholics
Both candidates had coveted the “Catholic vote,” an umbrella description for winning over the middle class. Clinton carried white Catholics at about the same percentage as his overall margin. He won handily among all Catholics, indicating a potent voting bloc of Hispanic Catholics.
A matter of class
Clinton rolled up significant margins among middle-income and lower-income voters, while Dole appeared to win a majority of those who earned above $75,000 a year.
