BE FAST . . . AND COOL: If you want to run faster and farther, take a long, cool bath before you hit the road. Researchers in Australia found that runners who wallowed in cool water for an hour were able to outrun a control group by about 300 meters in a 30-minute treadmill run.
CALORIE CONSUMPTION: Eating fewer calories at night won’t make you thinner, reports the Tufts University Diet & Nutrition Letter. In a recent study, women who consumed more than 50 percent of their calories after 5 p.m. were no heavier than those who ate less. Total number of calories consumed throughout the day mattered most.
WOUND TREATMENT: Avoid washing a wound with peroxide — it actually kills the surrounding tissue and inhibits proper healing. If the cut is clean, simply rinse it with water. If dirt is present, use soap and water. Resort to peroxide only if dirt is embedded in the wound. Lubricate the wound with petroleum jelly or a topical anti-bacterial ointment instead.
