Despite concerns that an increase in the county’s gasoline tax cannot be far behind, the Kane County Board formally appropriated $1 million Tuesday from its motor fuel tax fund to acquire right of way for the expected widening of heavily traveled Randall Road from Illinois Highway 72 in northern Kane to the McHenry County line.
The board plans to buy 29 parcels on the 3-mile strip, which is expected to cost $7 million to expand to four lanes.
Board member Dennis Kosinski (R-Elgin) said the county likely will be forced to move to double its state-mandated 2 cent-a-gallon gasoline tax to the maximum allowed to pay for several highway projects on the table.
