As one of thousands who attended the enthusiastic welcome for Cardinal Bernardin in Grant Park when he first arrived, I can only say the city, the Church and the world have lost a saintly man. He embodied what many of us Catholics consider to be the model priest. Though he was obliged to adhere to the Vatican’s precepts, he devoted his ministry to attempting to establish a common ground among divergent viewpoints. It is fervently hoped that his efforts will not die with him.
