Reader Laurie Baker wrote to say how she cringed in observing people racing the signals at railroad crossings (Voice, Nov. 21).

I live across the street from such a crossing and had made it a habit to run to beat the train. Then one day I cut it a little close and heard behind me a shriek of terror as a woman in a waiting car reacted to what she may have thought was a suicidal move.

Though this was years ago and I was rushing to make it to work on time, I was so ashamed of causing her this trauma that I have never again gone around the gate.
