The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce supports Ald. Bernard Hansen’s (44th) ordinance that would allow no resident permit-parking on “snow route” (arterial) streets that are 50 feet or less from any B and C zoning district. Residential zoning permits on arterial streets (such as those proposed in the Lincoln Park neighborhood) will cause substantial harm to businesses, forcing many to close or relocate.
The chamber supports Ald. Charles Bernardini’s (43rd) Nov. 12 moratorium on arterial street permit-parking and encourages the continued development of task forces that allow the concerns of residents, affected businesses and institutions to be healed.
The chamber contends that arterial streets are for the use of the general public and that everyone should be able to park on those same streets. We hope the City Council supports Ald. Hansen’s proposed ordinance and encourages Ald. Bernardini’s idea of resident/business task forces to protect the general public’s access to all of Chicago. The city cannot afford to lose the small businesses that create the neighborhoods that are such an important part of the city.
