Perhaps it’s time you sent Mike Kiley from your sports department to reality school. On Dec. 9 he wrote about Sox pitcher Alex Fernandez signing a five-year, $35 million contract. Mr. Kiley wrote, “If those numbers are correct, that was only $1 million a year more than the Sox offered.”

Only $1 million more? That $1 million would pay the salaries of 20 firefighters. Or pay for 20 police officers or 20 teachers–people who actually do something that matters.

If Mr. Fernandez doesn’t show up for work, his team may lose a game. If those 20 police officers or firefighters don’t show up, Mr. Kiley would know how much “only $1 million” was worth.
