Sixteen years after they claimed they were forced to resign their posts by incoming Democrats, three firefighters have been reinstated as captains.
The Fire Merit Commission’s action all but ends a 1985 court case by nine former Evansville Fire Department captains from the previous Republican city administration.
The nine had maintained that they were pressured by incoming Democrats to resign their posts in 1980. A special judge later ruled in their favor, saying they should be reinstated and receive back pay.
