Young people who drink and drive in Indiana will be at greater risk of losing their licenses starting this week. They don’t even have to be intoxicated.
A zero tolerance law that takes effect Wednesday makes it illegal for anyone under age 21 to drive with a blood-alcohol content at or above 0.02–the equivalent of about one beer. The level for adults is 0.10
Violating the law could result in fines up to $500 and the loss of driving privileges for a year.
According to Indiana State Police, 25 percent of the state’s alcohol-related crashes that caused injury in 1994 involved a driver under 21. Those crashes injured 1,345 people, 34 fatally.
