Unitrin Inc. reported Tuesday its fourth-quarter profits rose 4 percent, to $39.5 million, or $1.06 a share, from $37.8 million, or 97 cents a share, in the year-earlier period, when more shares were outstanding.
The Chicago-based life, health and property casualty insurer said revenue was basically flat at $381.6 million, up from $380.5 million in the year-earlier quarter.
For the year, net income fell about 12 percent, to $132.5 million, or $3.51 a share, from $150.6 million, or $3.73 a share, in 1995. Revenue rose about 7 percent, to $1.5 billion from $1.4 billion.
Revenue for the year ended Dec. 31, 1996, increased primarily as a result of the October 1995 acquisition of Milwaukee Insurance Group Inc., the company said.
