The widespread debate concerning whether Ebonics should be allowed in schools has overcome this country. We should rejoice over this “newfound” language because it is a measuring stick for how pitiful the standard in this country truly is. Ebonics is the perfect medium to demonstrate the condition of our country and its educational system.
I applaud Mike Royko’s Jan. 8 column headlined “When you talk Ebonics, words just get in the way.” Although I am certain this piece will be criticized and mangled, Mr. Royko does an excellent job in mocking the attitude held by the proprietors of Ebonics. Ebonics is a cry for help in this country. America needs to listen and solve the greater problem at hand.
