Mrs. Lester Ford of Chicago won the $5 prize for this recipe, which ran in 1948. It would make a great sandwich for Super Bowl Sunday. We used pressed, cooked packaged beef and Cheddar cheese; however, you also can use leftover sliced beef, your favorite cheese and toasted fresh baked bread.
CHEESE AND BEEF SANDWICH
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Yield: Six 1/3-cup servings
1/4 pound chipped beef, ground or chopped
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/4 pound Cheddar cheese, grated
1 egg, slightly beaten
Dash cayenne pepper
Toasted bread
1. Combine all ingredients except bread in top of double boiler or in heavy pan; cook over low heat until cheese melts, stirring constantly. Serve on toasted bread.
