Two restaurants and one hotel in North America have been awarded Mobil Travel Guide’s five-star award for the first time.

Daniel in New York City and the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead in Atlanta join 13 holdovers on the restaurant list of five-star winners in the just-released 1997 Mobil Travel Guides.

The repeat winners, by state or province, are: California–L’Orangerie, Hollywood; Illinois–Charlie Trotter’s and Everest (Chicago), and Le Francais (Wheeling); New York–Chanterelle, Les Celebrites and Lespinasse (New York City); Ohio–Maisonette (Cincinnati); Pennsylvania–Le Bec-Fin (Philadelphia); Texas–Restaurant at the Mansion on Turtle Creek (Dallas); Virginia–the Inn at Little Washington (Washington); Quebec–the Beaver Club and Nuances (Montreal).

The first-time hotel on the lodging five-star list is Chateau du Sureau in Oakhurst, Calif. Two other California hotels–Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and the Beverly Hills Hotel–also rejoined the five-star list.

The 22 other lodgings with the highest ratings are: Arizona–the Wigwam (Litchfield Park), Marriott’s Camelback Inn Resort Golf Club and Spa (Scottsdale) and the Phoenician (Scottsdale); California–the Peninsula Beverly Hills, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel and the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco; Colorado–Little Nell (Aspen), the Broadmoor (Colorado Springs), Tall Timber (Durango) and C Lazy U Ranch (Granby); Connecticut–Mayflower Inn (New Preston); Florida–the Ritz-Carlton Naples.

Also: Georgia–the Cloister (Sea Island); New York–Carlyle, Four Seasons and the St. Regis Hotel (New York City); Texas–Mansion on Turtle Creek (Dallas); Vermont–Twin Farms (Woodstock); Virginia–the Inn at Little Washington (Washington) and Williamsburg Inn; West Virginia–the Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs).

The 38th annual Mobil Travel Guide is published in seven regional volumes ($15.95 each) and one devoted to major cities ($16.95). An additional volume, “America’s Best Hotels and Restaurants: The Four- and Five-Star Winners for 1997,” will be published in February.
