I think it is deplorable that the U.S. will not pay its $1.4 billion in back dues owed to the United Nations unless, according to Sen. Jesse Helms and his group, “far-reaching reforms” are met (“Eyeing back dues, new UN leader woos Congress,” Main news, Jan. 24).

Like we all have a choice to pay or not when we receive a bill from the doctor, dentist or accountant? If the tooth heals, OK, we’ll pay? And then only a portion and the rest as we choose?

What an embarrassing example for the world leader to set for the rest of the world. And we wonder where other countries get the idea that the U.S. acts like a bully?
