As it has in previous years, the Sports Car Club of America, Chicago Region, will sport an exhibit at the Chicago Auto Show. Unlike past years, the SCCA won’t be in the lobby.
“We’ll be inside the show on the south end, or the far end from the entrance,” said display chairman Claire Ball of the organization’s 40- by 50-foot exhibit.
The exhibit will showcase the variety of auto racing activities the club sponsors, from SCCA amateur and professional road racing to rallyes and Solo events.
“(Visitors) can pick up information about joining the club and how they can get involved in working the races and social activities,” said Ball.
The 1997 racing schedule for Road America events in Elkhart Lake, Wis., will also be available.
Ball said visitors will be able to view about 10 cars used for racing and Solo events, including a Formula V, a small formula car with a Volkswagen engine; one of Bobby Rahal’s Indy cars; two Mustangs, one for Solo 2 racing and a 1996 Mustang Cobra that runs in the American sedan class; and a Mazda Formula car.
“Whether it’s an Indy car or any kind of racing car, people may see it on TV, but this is an opportunity to see it up-close,” he noted.
More than 100 club members and volunteers will work at the show, demonstrating the club’s appeal to a broad cross-section of auto enthusiasts, from professional and amateur drivers to those who like to be race workers.
