Former state Sen. Larry D. Macklin was named director of the Department of Natural Resources on Thursday following a campaign by some sportsmen’s groups to oust the agency’s current chief.

Gov. Frank O’Bannon had received dozens of calls and letters urging him to remove Patrick R. Ralston, who was appointed to acting DNR director by then-Gov. Evan Bayh in 1989.

O’Bannon on Thursday named Ralston director of the State Emergency Management Agency.
