It is unfortunate that Si Frumkin could not advocate for Alzheimer’s sufferers without disparaging the hard-won advances and ongoing struggles of AIDS research and treatment (Op-Ed, Feb. 11). Where has Mr. Frumkin been living that he can discount AIDS as an easily avoidable disease of careless or promiscuous (albeit well-organized) gays and lesbians rather than the worldwide epidemic we know it to be?

In an economic/social climate that increasingly forces difficult choices about priorities–such as whom to cure, feed or give sanctuary– let us not turn our sick and infirm against one another.
