Peoria-based Caterpillar’s exports set a company record in 1996, topping the $5 billion mark for the second consecutive year. The earthmoving and construction machinery maker shipped $5.5 billion worth of product from its U.S. facilities to customers overseas, a 7 percent increase over 1995.
