“Adoptive parents of foreign-born children believe they are rescuing them.” So states the subhead on the front-page story titled “Adapting to adoption” (March 3).

What an unfortunate perception! People who build families through international adoption should be doing so for the selfish reason of wanting to love and nurture a child. Parenthood is not an altruistic undertaking–it is a lifetime of work and love dedicated to raising children to be the best human beings they can be.

Persons wishing to rescue children should save themselves a lot of trouble and send their money to international relief agencies.
