Andre Agassi, the two-time defending champion of the Lipton Championships, continued the worst slump of his career.
Agassi, 26, lost his opening match to Australian Scott Draper, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. It was Agassi’s fifth loss in a row.
“I’m not tired,” said the 26-year-old multi-millionaire. “I’m not through.”
He has failed to win so much as a set in the past six weeks, losing to Greg Rusedski, Gustavo Kuerten, Javier Sanchez, Mark Philippoussis and Draper.
On the women’s side of the draw, 16-year-old Venus Williams rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the first set to beat Jennifer Capriati 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2.
“The phenom against the ex-phenom,” Capriati termed the match.
