Well, another year, another comet. This time it’s called Comet Hale-Bopp, and, predictably, the press and the Adler Planetarium are in heat, the latter predicting that “comet mania will take hold and a rejoicing, wide-eyed public won’t be able to get enough.” Says Adler curator Anna Friedman, “Up until the end of the 17th Century, comets were thought to portend terrible things like war, storms and plague.” Now we know that all-out media blitzes must be added to that list.
