The Garifuna, whose African and Native American ancestors successfully resisted slavery, this year celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of their arrival on the shores of Central America after being forcibly exiled from the island of St. Vincent by British colonizers. “The Garifuna Journal,” organized by the Garifuna community of Belize and directed by award-winning filmmakers Andrea Leland and Kathy Berger, chronicles the rich history of this community through oral interviews, original watercolor paintings, poetry, hand-crafted artifacts, photographs, and videotapes. The exhibit is on display at the Beacon Street Gallery, 1145 W. Wilson, through May 9. For more information, call 773-769-4284.
