Classrooms will be combined at Sandy Knoll Elementary School next year in a one-year pilot project that groups students by ability, not age.

Multi-age classrooms blend the positive aspects of the old one-room schoolhouses, with teachers armed with updated education techniques, said Ann Pecotte, assistant superintendent at the Marquette school district.

The plan was approved by the Marquette school board this week.
