I was greatly offended by Thomas Roeser’s assertion that Cardinal Joseph Bernardin “pursued basically secular ends” (“Media failed in coverage of Francis George,” Op-Ed, April 21).
Quite the contrary. Cardinal Bernardin pursued spiritual understanding and inclusion of the many different types of people who make up the Catholic faith. It was Bernardin’s departure from past methods of deaf, dogmatic theology ignorant to the social situations around it that rubbed his critics the wrong way. These critics, Roeser included, fail to see that the problems of the Church and our society do not all stem from lack of family morals. Let’s pray that Archbishop George knows this and works for greater understanding.
