Samuel R. Turpin, former chairman of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee, was indicted Monday on charges of bribery, filing false finance reports and perjury.

The charges stemmed from allegations that Turpin took bribes from the lead contractor in a Lawrenceburg riverboat casino project.

The indictments center on the relationship between Turpin and Indianapolis-based American Consulting Engineers, The Indianapolis Star reported. ACE is one of the state’s largest public works and casino contractors and was the lead engineering firm on the $200 million Lawrenceburg project.

Turpin (R-Brownsburg) resigned as Ways and Means chairman last year after the Star revealed that he failed to properly report at least $46,000 in retainer payments from ACE.
