I was touched to find on the front page of the April 30 Tribune the picture I had taken more than 20 years ago of Mike Royko playing softball on the Chicago Daily News team.
This photo was originally published in the Insight column in the Daily News, along with Mike’s definitive article on 16-inch softball in the Chicago area. I’ve always felt a special bond to him. It was his passion in everything he did that resounds so mightily and that I feel so strongly. Although I never met him personally, I think I knew him well. I will miss him.
To Mike, I say: So long, good buddy. See you down the road.
