Mike Royko is gone. I knew it would happen someday, but it’s still not welcome news. A big chunk of Chicago’s soul has passed on.

Royko’s writing was cantankerous and opinionated–and we loved it. His columns were more like a smokestack of a steel mill than an ivory tower of literature. Pure Chicago.
