U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala and a host of other dignitaries will gather here Wednesday for the ground-breaking of the nation’s first free-standing outpatient treatment center for those with HIV/AIDS.
The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the northwest corner of Damen Avenue and Harrison Street.
The $25 million facility, to be staffed jointly by Cook County Hospital and Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, will conduct research and provide comprehensive health care for those living with HIV/AIDS and related infectious diseases.
The state-of-the-art center is being funded by federal, state and private funds, including $7 million from the private sector.
