Thank heavens for “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz. He understands the need to recognize June 6, 1944.

The Tribune, on the other hand, except for a brief mention in the Almanac, ignored the anniversary of D-Day altogether.

The Normandy invasion epitomized the insanity that was World War II. Thousands of young men–boys, really– endured unimaginable horrors as they were killed, maimed or saw their buddies blown apart on those French beaches 53 years ago. As a nation, we asked them to do this, and on the anniversary of that day, of all days, we owe them, at least, a sincere, “Thanks, pal.”

We also owe them our understanding and compassion for the unhealable wounds, physical or emotional, that they suffered on that terrible day. June 6 is a good day for us to remember that and for you to help us remember.
