Meyer A. Elman, 98, an electrical engineer who worked on the electrical design of hospitals, schools and office buildings, and continued working well into his 70s, died Monday in Glenview Terrace Nursing Home. Mr. Elman, who would have turned 99 on July 12, was a native of Russia who immigrated with his parents as a teenager in 1912. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1923 with a degree in electrical engineering. For many years he worked for Skidmore Owings and Merrill, an architecture firm, as an electrical engineer. He later served as a consultant on the electrical design for Buffalo Grove High School and Kemper Insurance Cos. in Long Grove. For most of his life, until 1991, Mr. Elman lived in the West Rogers Park neighborhood. He worked for seniors’ rights and belonged to several organizations for seniors. “He was a prince to all who knew him. He was a gentleman and a scholar,” said his stepdaughter, Clarice Grossman. He is also survived by two sons, Norman and Fred, and a step-granddaughter. Services were held Wednesday.
