Though the list of film villains (Arts & Entertainment, June 29) is naturally somewhat biased in favor of more recent cinema malevolence, I am moved to nominate Hume Cronyn, who, as a sadistic prison officer in “Brute Force” (1947), caused no end of nightmares and made it hard to believe his later roles as a benign Lilliputian.
