Writer Joe Knowles made my day. I enjoy listening to the Sandberg whiners. The problem with today’s fans and writers is they think that everything done today is the greatest in history, whether a team or individual, regardless of the sport.
Sandberg could have made the majors in the long ago, but he wouldn’t have been an All-Star. Neither would he have hit all those home runs. Mark Grace was recently quoted as saying that next year baseball will have many more Double-A pitchers due to more expansion. The fact is that Grace has been facing many Double-A and Triple-A pitchers in his career. Baseball has never been more watered down.
The Cubs did have a real All-Star second baseman in Billy Herman. For 15 years, his career average was .304 and he was instrumental in getting the Cubs to three World Series.
