I am upset that news reports about murder suspect Andrew Cunanan keep using terms like “homosexual killer” and “gay murder.” I don’t remember hearing the term “heterosexual murder” used at any time during the O.J. Simpson coverage.

Sensationalized terms only reinforce negative public attitudes about gays. That is a shame because the overwhelming majority of gay people are decent, law-abiding, taxpaying citizens who lead quiet lives in the house next door or down the street.

Unfortunately, some people look for any excuse to justify their prejudice against gays. But murder is murder. It does not extend from someone’s sexual orientation.
